Membership Info

There are two types of membership for PHLiC, both of which are free:

Review Only Membership: The only requirement for this type of membership is registration with The Excesior Academy umbrella program under their support group option (listing PHLiC as the support group), as well as, attendance of the annual review session. This type of membership is best for those not wishing to plan or participate in regular group activities, but wanting the convenience of a group review.

Full Membership: This level of membership entitles the member family to participate in all group activities, as well as, planning meetings and the review session. Participation in the umbrella program review is not a requirement, but an option for those who do not wish to review with their county board of education. Full members are required to host/plan/organize one activity (fieldtrip, class, workshop, playgroup, etc.) per year. This activity can be a one time event (eg. - trip to a museum) or an ongoing group (ie. - weekly music class). The concept behind this membership is to increase the opportunities for homeschoolers in the area by tapping into the talents and skills of its members. This also ensures that a larger number of activities will be planned, though the effort and time required by each member will be minimized. Details and suggestions as to how to plan an activity are listed below.

Activity Planning Tips:
While it is certainly best if you plan an activity based on your own skills or interests, it is also important to ensure a balance of available activities for the group. Thus, prior to planning your required annual activity, please contact the Activities Schedule Coordinator to check available dates and discuss what activity categories need the most attention.

Activity Suggestions:
One-time Activity: Fieldtrips are a great way to satisfy your membership requirement if you'd rather not organize an ongoing event. Think about what interests your children have and go from there. Some possibilities include museums, banks, fire or police stations, farm tours and factory tours. Consider the resources you have available. If you live on a farm and raise horses, consider setting up an information workshop/fieldtrip about caring for horses. If you are trying to get your children to appreciate the value of money, try contacting your bank to see about setting up a short tour and lesson about saving money. There are unlimited possibilities.

Ongoing Activity: If you'd like to see your children have the opportunity to participate more regularly in a group activity, consider reaching out into your community or offering your own time and skills to organize a regular class or special interest group. Some examples could include a yoga class, a music class, a science club, roller-skating, teen night, craft club, playgroup, story time or book club. Ongoing activities can be more challenging to arrange when they involve getting a minimum number of participants to qualify for a group rate, or when requesting services from local businesses, but if you have an interest, be persistent, and solicit other group members to get involved to make it happen!
